Hi there! I’m thrilled you’re here! I’m Dana, a quasi-designer,
craft enthusiast, canine loving foodie that loves to write about all the joys at home. In the real world I sell houses. This is my blog, welcome to Residence Joy and Welcome Home!
Feel the heat of the sun? Summer is HERE. That means it’s time for fresh vegetables.
Feel the heat of the sun? Is your air conditioning running nonstop throughout the day? Mine is, but I live in zone 7a. Does that sound like something you’d read about in one of Suzanne Collins Hunger Games novels? It’s not. If your new to gardening you might be surprised to know that the USDA has a map of zones for the U.S.A. and Canada. The map indicates what your growing timetable is, if you’re growing your own vegetables. It’s also very helpful for maintaining flowers. Click here for the link to see what zone your live in.
Homegrown Okra
My summer garden is in full swing (don’t worry, there’s a whole blog article in the works) and of all my vegetables, I’m really looking forward to the okra harvest. Okra is a summer staple. It is the epitome of a summer food. But okra doesn’t get much attention anymore. I feel like it’s regarded as the kind of food grandmothers cook. Kind of like potato salad. But okra is delicious and healthy. Of course, fried okra is the best of all. You know what they say, it if tastes good it’s probably not good for you. But if you’ve never tried frying okra, it is easy to do. You’ll eat the fried nuggets just like popcorn. Here’s my recipe for fried okra.
If you’re going to a summer BBQ, or anywhere you need to take a potluck dish, fried okra is always a hit! My platter is always picked clean!
