SIMPLE NATURAL BIRD FEEDER
It’s almost winter and while you might be anxiously awaiting Spring, so are your feathered friends. It’s easy to make this simple birdfeeder, to give the birds a treat.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Scissors
Butter knife
Twine or ribbon
2 Tablespoons Creamy Peanut Butter
Pinecone
1 cup of low sugar cereal (I used stale cereal)
Yes, cereal is safe to feed birds!
Do birds love cereal? The answer is yes! While cereal may not be your first thought when you think of bird food, it does the job. And stale cereal, like the box I found in the back of my cabinet stuck behind other canned goods needed to be put to use.
I did a google search and as it turns out, low sugar cereal is not only safe for birds – it’s a treat!
Step One: Tie a string on pinecone
I cut a short piece of baker’s twine. Any natural fiber works great, as the material will decompose naturally. You want to tie the string before you add the peanut butter so it’s less messy.
Step Two: Add the peanut butter
Use the butter knife to smear the peanut butter in a band around the pinecone.
Step three: Add the cereal
Dump one cup of cereal in a small bowl then roll the peanut butter coated pinecone around in the cereal. The Cereal sticks to the peanut butter beautifully.
And that’s it! You can stick some cereal into the pinecone petals just to use more cereal. TIP – put the pinecone in a plastic bag to take it outside so you don’t lose any cereal throughout the house. Then watch the birds pick it clean. The lead photo was taken the day after I hung the pinecone on a low tree in my yard.
